Thomson Scientific and Dialog Announce Upcoming Availability of Enhanced Derwent World Patents Index
London, UK (29 November
2005)
Thomson Scientific and Dialog
today announced at Online Information 2005 that
the enhanced version of Derwent World Patents
Index® (DWPISM) will be available
on the Dialog online service in quarter one, 2006.
DWPI is a comprehensive database of value-added
patent information and is provided by Thomson Scientific.
The enhanced DWPI database (Files 350, 351
and 352 on Dialog) will extend the content and functionality
of the database and improve the ability of a searcher
to find the patent records they need.
"The more robust features and content available
in the new DWPI file allows our customers
to extract greater value from DWPI," said
David Brown, Dialog general manager. "Those
familiar with DWPI will continue to find everything
they expect from DWPI, plus new information
that will allow for greater analysis of the returned
patent data."
The file is being re-designed to accommodate the
requirements of the International Patent Classification
(IPC), Version 8, which enters into force January
1, 2006. As a result of the changes to the IPC classification,
all DWPI records affected by the patent
office reclassification will be updated on an ongoing
basis and IPC fields will be added in the online
file, allowing users to easily distinguish between
original and re-classified IPC data.
Also, available for the first time will be 750,000
documentation abstracts in a text-searchable format.
The enhanced file also will include new family member
sub-sections, which include first-level data such
as the original patent titles and abstracts, extra
bibliographic data such as full names of inventors
and associated addresses, patent assignee addresses
and patent agent information.
"We are pleased to be working with our Dialog
colleagues in making the enhanced version of DWPI available
to our shared customers," said Brian Tyler,
executive vice president of corporate markets. "Our
enhancements will help searchers gain the maximum
benefit from the IPC8 reform, and conduct even more
effective searches of the extensive patent information
in Derwent World Patents Index."
A test file of the enhanced DWPI is being
presented at the Online Information 2005 conference
from November 29 to December 1, 2005. Conference
attendees are invited to the Thomson Scientific and
Dialog stand (Stand no. 248) for a sneak preview
of the enhanced database.
