the 2008 Roger K. Summit Scholarship for North America

University of British Columbia (UBC). The announcement
was made at a special ceremony during the Special

WA.
The Roger K. Summit Scholarship is awarded twice

East, Asia Pacific and Africa.
Zaher-Mazawi is enrolled in UBC’s Joint program
for Masters in Library and Information Science and

Archival and Information Studies. She is focusing
her research on exploring and understanding how information
retrieval systems, including library catalogues,

meet the information needs of various users.
The scholarship is named in honor of Dialog founder
Roger K. Summit, a pioneer in developing the technology
behind online information retrieval. Scholarship
winners must demonstrate proficiency in using Dialog®,
academic achievement, and interest in the field of
electronic information services.
“We’re pleased to present this year’s
Roger K. Summit Scholarship to Suher,” said
Libby Trudell, Vice President, Market Development. “Through
her work experience in libraries and previously as
a mathematics teacher, Suher has demonstrated a passionate
interest in understanding information seeking behavior.
I am confident her global perspective, as well as
diverse work background and education will serve
her well in her future career as an information professional.”
Zaher-Mazawi’s interest in the information
field stems from her extensive mathematics background,
which includes 12 years of teaching experience as
well as a Master of Arts degree in Exact Science
Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics
and Computer Science. In addition to her work at
several university and public libraries, she gained
considerable experience in records management while
working at the City of Vancouver Records Management
